1. Anatomy and Physiology

• Human and ocular anatomy with focus on:

• Bony orbit, ocular adnexa (eyelids, lacrimal system), extraocular muscles, cranial nerves

• Coats of the eyeball: Cornea, Sclera, Uvea, Retina, Lens, Vitreous humor

2. Physiology of the Eye


• Mechanisms of vision including color vision

• Ocular motility and binocular vision

• Accommodation and convergence (focusing mechanisms)

• Aqueous and lacrimal fluid formation and circulation

3. Physics & Optics

• Laws of refraction and reflection for spherical and cylindrical surfaces

• Optical aberrations (imperfections in ophthalmic lenses/glasses)

• Prisms: terminology and practical applications in ophthalmology

4. Microbiology

• Ocular pathogens: bacteria, viruses, fungi

• Diagnostic techniques: conjunctival smears, cultures, scrapings, Gram’s & KOH staining

• Infection control: cross-infection prevention, antisepsis, asepsis


5. Clinical Pathology

• Basic lab tests: urine exams for albumin/sugar

• Preparation and staining of blood slides for DLC and malaria parasites

6. Ophthalmic Pharmacy

• Drug delivery methods for eye conditions

• Common ophthalmic medications: preparation, dispensing, side-effects, dosages (e.g., fluorescein, atropine, pilocarpine, antibiotics)

• Drug categories: Anesthetics, Antibiotics, Cycloplegics, Miotics, Mydriatics

7. Vision Testing & Refraction

• Principles of visual acuity testing

• Geometrical & physiological optics, refractive error correction (myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, presbyopia, aphakia)

• Ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses (uses, abuses), spectacle checking, and low vision aids (LVA)

• Objective & subjective refraction techniques (e.g., retinoscopy)

• Visual field testing principles and methods

8. Common Eye Diseases & Emergencies

• Infections & inflammations: conjunctivitis (including trachoma), corneal ulcers and opacities, iritis, eyelid/lacrimal sac diseases

• Effects of systemic disorders (diabetes, hypertension) on the eye

9. Ocular Emergencies

• Management of chemical, mechanical, and radiation injuries (including foreign bodies)

• Acute conditions: sudden blindness, acute glaucoma

• General/ophthalmic emergency resuscitation procedures

10. Instruments & Equipment

• Identification and usage of ophthalmic instruments

• Basics of maintenance and care of diagnostic equipment

• Principles of asepsis in ocular surgery
